Treat recovery as the real product

Before depositing a meaningful balance, confirm where the backup is created, whether it is ever typed into a connected device, how passphrases are handled, and whether recovery works with another compatible wallet. Store backups separately from the device, protect them from fire and water, and never photograph or upload them to cloud storage.

A hardware wallet is valuable only when it lets you confirm what is being signed. Compare screen readability, address display, amount and fee visibility, token or contract information, and how clearly the device distinguishes a normal transfer from a smart-contract approval.

Never approve a transaction merely because the companion app says it is safe. Malware can alter information on the computer. The secure display should be the final source of truth. If a transaction is too complex to decode on-device, lower the amount, split the action, or use a dedicated wallet for experimental activity.

Evaluate the whole support system

Review the vendor’s update history, vulnerability disclosure process, documentation quality and expected support life. Consider whether firmware and companion software are independently inspectable, but avoid treating “open source” as a magic label. Reproducible builds, auditability and a responsive security team matter more than marketing language.

Also check chain support carefully. A wallet may technically support an asset while offering poor transaction detail or relying on a third-party interface. Buy only from the manufacturer or an authorized seller, inspect packaging, initialize the device yourself and reject any unit that arrives with a pre-written recovery phrase.

  2. Initialize the device and create a fresh backup.
  3. Set a strong PIN and understand wipe or retry behaviour.

  6. Wipe and recover the test wallet before storing a larger balance.
  7. Schedule periodic backup and firmware checks.
